James Island Outreach was formed as an emergency response to people's needs in the wake of the devastation of Hurricane Hugo in 1989. Area churches came together to help those who had nowhere else to turn for food and other assistance.
Today, in coordination with area public and private human service agencies, JIO, through volunteers and a small staff, provides crisis relief and on-going assistance in the areas of:
JIO is a non-profit, tax-exempt agency. It is supported through donations of time, food, and funds by area churches, congregations, businesses, and individuals. The activities of JIO are governed by a Board of Directors made up of supporting congregation representatives and concerned citizens of the community.
