James Island Outreach was created in the wake of the damage wrought by Hurricane Hugo in 1989. It was the result of churches in the area coming together to help those who had nowhere else to turn for food and other needs.
Now, in coordination with area public and private service agencies, JIO provides crisis relief and on-going assistance in the areas of:
- Emergency food and medicines
- Utility and rent assistance
- Information and referral
- Workshops for financial management
It is a non-profit, tax exempt agency, which is supported through donations of time, food, and funds by area churches, businesses civic organizations, and individuals.
